Welsh Athletics Senior Indoor Championships, NIAC, Cardiff – Jan 25

The first Welsh Championships of the decade was held las Saturday at NIAC in Cardiff with new championships best performances set and over 30 new Welsh Champions crowned.

 

Sam Gordon sailed through the heats to dominate the final, clocking a new championship best performance in 6.69

 

Sarah Abrams beat her own previous championship best performance and was just short of the Welsh record in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.42m.

 

Shannon Malone retained her title in the 60m, running 7.52, beating Mica Moore and Hannah Williams who also looked strong through the rounds.

 

Commonwealth athlete, Jonny Hopkins dominated the field in the men’s 1500m. Jonny, who is chasing GB selection this year, led the race from the start and quickly created a gap between him and the chasing pack winning the welsh title in 3:52.17

 

In the field, Adele Nicoll dominated the Shot competition with a throw of 15.96 showing consistency throughout the rounds and Curtis Matthews once again showed form winning the Long Jump individual title with a jump of 7.07m to add to his Shot bronze and 60m hurdles gold.

Dr Sander Columbia Challenge, New York, USA – Jan 25

Welshman Jac Hopkins has returned to good form after a long standing injury, competing at a competition in the US, he clocked a fast 8:09.80 in the 3000m.

Lliswerry 8, Newport – Jan 26

Paul Graham of Pontrypridd Roadents took the in at the Lliswerry 8 yesterday in quick 39:29 with Swansea Harriers runner Marc Hobbs and San Domenico Road RC runner Luke Williams just behind him in 40:09 and 40:12 respectively.  

In the Women’s race, host club runners Elizabeth Dimond and Emma Wookey took 1st and 2nd. Dimond took the win in 49:02 and Wookey didn’t finish far behind in 49:51. That wasn’t all for Lliswerry Runners, they claimed the clean sweep thanks to Sandra Chipper who finished 3rd in 50:30.
