Home Countries U18 Youth International Mountain Running Championships
Saturday 24th July saw the staging of the Home Countries U18 Youth Mountain Running Championships in Ambleside, Cumbria. The event was hoped to be the re-arranged WMRA U18 Cup postponed from 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, but with the current related travel issues, it meant that only the Home Countries competed.
An inexperienced Welsh Athletics team, with all of the athletes new to the discipline, arrived at the venue on Friday ready for a good look at the course in the midst of the July heatwave and with the Lake District full of tourists.
A joint race, with males and females together, started at 10.30am on Saturday in far more favourable conditions with the temperature having dropped markedly from the day before. Among the early pacesetters in the males was Deri McCluskey (Maldwyn Harriers) with Cameron Shaw (Menai T&F) not far behind, whilst in the females, Maddison Griffiths (Maldwyn Harriers) was also well up with the leaders. As the race developed some of the more experienced mountain/fell runners, from particularly Scotland and England, started to assert their skills. Scotland eventually took both individual wins as well as both team prizes. The best of the Welsh finishers were the Maldwyn Harriers pair of Deri McCluskey (11th 23mins 21secs) and Maddison Griffiths (11th 27mins 07secs) who lead their teams to fourth overall.
All of our athletes were a credit to their country and will benefit from the experience. Those selected for the forthcoming Junior Home International in Northern Ireland on September 4th will be able to build on that experience.
