England Senior & U20 Combined Events, Walks & Para Championships, 6-7 January
Welsh athletes headed to Sheffield over the weekend for the England Senior & U20 Combined Events, Walks & Para Championships which saw two Welsh Champions crowned and many PB’s to start the new indoor season.
In the Women’s Pentathlon Lauren Evans (Cardiff Athletics) retained her Welsh title with 4041 points, which saw her finish second overall in the British & English Combined Events Championships.
Whilst Jessica Lee (Carmarthen & District Harriers) claimed the Welsh U20 title with a personal best of 3666 points and two individual personal bests in the 60m hurdles and high jump. Lee also finished second overall in the England Combined Events. Whilst Abi Belward (Winchester) finished sixth overall points score of 3343.
In the U20 men’s heptathlon Iolo Grant (Cardiff Archers) enjoyed six new personal bests, including a new overall points best of 4867, whilst finishing fifth overall.
Gracie Griffiths (Pembrokeshire Harriers) started the 2024 season with a 20 second indoor personal best and victory in the u20 women’s 3000m Race Walk, with a time of 14:14:44.
Sheffield BMC, 7 January
On Sunday Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd Roadents) finished second over 3000m with a time of 9:04. Whilst Piers Copeland (Cardiff Athletics) finished sixth in the men’s 3000m with a time of 7:58.84, whilst Ben Reynolds (Cardiff/Oregan) finished eleventh with a time of 8:14.95
Junior Indoor Open, 7 January
Sunday saw the second Junior Indoor Open take place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff, with over 400 athletes competing. The event also incorporates the South, East & West Wales and the Southwest England Regional Championships.
Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist Tomi Roberts-Jones (Newport Harriers) took to the track in his season opener, which saw a new indoor 60m personal best with a time of 8.81.
North Wales Cross Country Championships, 7 January
The North Wales Cross Country League returned on Sunday at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham.
Martha Owen (Deeside) took victory in the senior women’s race after a long battle with Joanne Henderson (Denbigh Harriers), and an emphatic win for the returning Matt Willis (Wrexham) in the senior men’s race. Whilst Eryri Harriers took the team titles in both the men and women’s races.
In the Junior races, there were victories for both Martha Bown (Menai Track & Field) and Beca Bown (Menai Track & Field) in the U13 & U17 races.
