ENGLAND ATHLETICS SENIOR AND UNDER-20 CHAMPIONSHIPS INCORPORATING THE SENIOR PARA CHAMPIONSHIPS AND CAU CHAMPIONSHIPS – BIRMINGHAM, JULY 25-27
Welsh athletes headed to Birmingham looking for medals at the event which also incorporated the trials for next month’s European Under-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.
And there were golds aplenty across the age groups and categories, with the Welsh throwers particularly impressing in the senior events.
Despite currently concentrating on her bobsleigh training for next February’s Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games athlete Adele Nicoll (Birchfield Harriers) won the senior women’s shot put (4kg) with a throw of 16.59m
Fellow Transition Programme athlete Freya Jones (Harrow) also struck gold in the Senior Women’s (600g) Javelin with a distance of 48.00m as did T11 para sprinter James Ledger (Swansea Harriers) who won the para ambulant senior men’s 100m with a time of 11.67.
There were also successes for a trio of World Class Programme athletes.
F44 Paralympian Harrison Walsh (Swansea Harriers) won gold in the men’s para ambulant (2kg) discus final with a throw of 52.53m
Commonwealth Games T38 100m champion Olivia Breen (City of Portsmouth) won gold in the senior women’s para ambulant long jump with a season’s best distance of 4.70m.
F44 Paralympian Funmi Oduwaiye (Cardiff Athletics) won the para ambulant senior women’s (4kg) shot put final with a throw of 11.65m. She also claimed silver in the para ambulant (1kg) women’s discus with a throw of 35.20m.
Another F44 para athlete Bree Cronin (Cardiff Athletics) won the para ambulant (1kg) women’s discus with a throw of 36.61m.
Transition programme athlete Hannah Lake (Cardiff Athletics) finished second in the senior women’s high jump with a best of 1.78m – just pipping heptathlon world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson to the silver medal.
Kieran Jones (Cardiff Athletics) earned a silver medal in the men’s seated shot with a distance of 8.22m which brought 482 Raza points.
Meanwhile F63 athlete Julie Rogers (Bedford and County) was third in the para ambulant senior women’s (4kg) shot put final with a season’s best throw of 7.62m.
Sophie Lisk (Cardiff Archers) just missed out on a medal in the senior women’s 400m hurdles, where she finished fourth in 62.13, while Lilly Noble (Deeside AAC) was fifth in 62.26.
Commonwealth Games competitor Lauren Evans (Cardiff Athletics) finished sixth in the senior women’s heptathlon. Evans recorded a number of individual season’s bests on her way to an overall season’s best score of 5,217.
NDP athlete Amelia Fettis (Newport Harriers) gained a sixth place finish in the senior women’s hammer (4kg) with 54.58m.
In the under-20 championships, Matilda Quick (Swansea Harriers), who last year won the English under-17 heptathlon title, claimed the under-20 gold this time around. The NDP athlete registered three personal bests on her way to claiming the title.
Quick started her competition with a PB of 14.29 in the 100m hurdles, added another of 1.67m in the high jump, and completed the hat-trick with a javelin throw of 29.74m.
The overall winning total of 4,965 was also a personal best for Quick as she claimed victory over Isla Pain (Cheltenham and County Harriers) with 4,821.
Quick’s Swansea Harriers team mate Millie Gold, who has the under-20 selection standard finished second in the women’s under-20 steeplechase in 10:33.79.
The men’s under-20 javelin saw Isaac Bromwich (Deeside AAC) throw a new PB of 59.53m to claim a silver medal.
There was also a second place in the women’s under-20 long jump final for Transition Programme jumper Jess Lee (Thames Valley Harriers) who registered a best of 6.05m.
Fellow transition programme athlete Eden Robinson (Cardiff Archers) claimed the bronze medal with a season’s best 5.92m. The young multi-eventer also celebrated a new PB of 14.27m and a third place finish in the women’s under-20 shot put final.
NDP sprinter Jessica Mantle (Cardiff Athletics) claimed a bronze medal in the under-20 100m final in a wind assisted 11.49, having run a PB of 11.60 in the semi-finals. Fellow NDP and Great Britain international Nell Desir (Cardiff Archers) was fifth in 11.65.
Great Britain international Owen Garrett (Yate) was third in the men’s under-20 (1.75kg) discus final with a distance of 49.45m. He was also sixth in the under-20 men’s (6kg) shot put final with a throw of 14.07m.
NDP athlete, Jack Organ (Brecon Athletics Club), who has the selection standard for Tampere, was fourth in the under-20 men’s 800m final in 1:49.58.
Charlie Shaull (Swansea Harriers) finished fourth in the men’s under-20 pole vault with a personal best of 4.55m.
Lucy Harris (Swansea Harriers) was fifth in the women’s under-20 (1kg) discus final with a throw of 40.27m
The men’s under-20 steeplechase saw NDP athletes Iwan Thomas (Carmarthen Harriers) finish fifth in a PB of 9:19.27 with Henry Evans (Newport Harriers) eighth in 9:26.26.
Another NDP athlete, Abdul Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) finished seventh in the under-20 triple jump with a best of 13.98m, while Anya Brady (Newport Harriers) clocked 2:16.83 finishing eleventh in the under-20 women’s 800m final.
The under-20 team for Tampere will be selected on Monday 28 July and announced on Thursday 31 July.
FOLKSAM GP, GOTEBORG – SWEDEN – JULY 26
Multi-talented distance runner Cari Hughes (Cardiff Athletics) unveiled yet another string to her bow as she broke the Welsh 3,000m steeplechase record on her debut in the event.
Hughes, who has represented Great Britain at cross country and has competed successfully over a range of distances on the track and the road, produced a brilliant run to clock 9:55.55 in Sweden.
The time, which saw Hughes finish in fifth place, surpassed the previous Welsh record of 9:55.96 set by Kate Seary (Cardiff Athletics) in the United States in 2022.
WELSH ATHLETICS/WELSH SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENTS – SWANSEA, JULY 26
Welsh Athletics National Development Programme multi-eventer Macsen Martins-Hughes (Cardiff Athletics) won the Under-17 men’s pentathlon in Swansea.
Martins-Hughes’ performance including a new PB of 9.45m in the shot put, to amass a total of 2,857. Second place went to Isias Balde (Cardiff Archers) with 2,607.
The women’s under-17 pentathlon was won by another NDP athlete, Tabitha Ventress-Brett (Swansea Harriers) with a total of 2,570. Like Martens-Hughes, Ventress-Brett celebrated a PB in the shot put with 9.16m.
Winner of the under-15 boys pentathlon was Ted Lancaster (Aberdare Valley AAC) with 2,514 points, while the under-15 girls pentathlon was won by Sophie Piddington (Newport Harriers) with 2,570.
Llewellyn Morgan (Cardiff Archers) won the under-13 boys quad with 1,202, while the honours in the girls event was won by Betty Lancaster (Aberdare Valley AAC) with 1,590 points.
MAGOR 10K – MAGOR, JULY 27
Matthew Rees (Swansea Harriers) was the winner of the Magor 10k in 32:11 on Sunday. Phil Hambleton (Les Croupiers) was second in 32:38 with Ross Purchase (Porthcawl Runners) third in 32:56.
Donna Morris (Builth & District Harriers) claimed victory in 35:54 ahead of Sioned Howells (Swansea Harriers) in 36:39 and Emily Fell (Les Croupiers RC) who was thhird in a time of 37:19.
NORTH WALES JUNIOR LEAGUE 3 (INCLUDING OPEN MEETING) – BANGOR, JULY 27
Colwyn Bay took the honours in the North Wales Junior League fixture at the Treborth Athletics Track in Bangor. Colwyn Bay amassed a total of 179 points to finish ahead of Menai Track and Field and Deeside AAC.
