WELSH INDOOR U-13, U-15, U20 AND PARA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 49th Welsh Junior Championships witnessed almost 500 of Wales most promising young athletes produce an enthralling weekend of high quality competition.
There were Welsh records, championship bests and thrilling finals to keep spectators entertained across the two days.
Leading the way records-wise was prodigious Under-13 middle distance talent Rowan Carson (Bridgend Athletics) who claimed the 800 and 1500m double by breaking the Welsh age group and championship best times in both events.
Oliver Cobbold (Swansea Harriers) also plundered a Welsh age group and championship best record as he won the Under-15 boys 3,000m final.
ENGLAND ATHLETICS SENIOR, UNDER-20 COMBINED EVENTS PARA AND RACE WALK CHAMPIONSHIPS – SHEFFIELD, JANUARY 17 AND 18
Matilda Quick (Swansea Harriers) smashed the Welsh indoor record on her way to winning the Under-20 Women’s Pentathlon event in South Yorkshire.
In a dominant all-round performance, Quick opened her account with a win in the 60 hurdles. It was a lead she never relinquished, and her 8.69 personal best was the first of four she would collect throughout the day.
In the high jump, Quick bowed out at 1.71m, her best-ever height, which kept her in the lead overall from Isla Pain (Cheltenham) by 45 points.
Quick kept up her remarkable form as the competition moved to the shot put circle, where the Welsh athlete threw a big lifetime best of 12.09m to extend her overall lead to 198 points.
And it was a fourth personal best out of four in the long jump as Quick leapt out to 5.86m in the long jump.
With a lead of 381 points going into the final event, there was no need for further PB heroics in the 800m for Quick as she clocked 2:34.43.
The remarkable overall performance meant Quick had set a new Welsh Under-20 record of 3,943 points.
Cerys Fitzpatrick (Carmarthen Harriers) finished third overall and was the second female in the Under-15 mixed 1,000m walk, registering a new PB of 5:29.10.
Meanwhile, Gwen Fitzpatrick (Carmarthen Harriers) finished fifth overall and second female in the Under-13 mixed 1,000m walk, clocking 6:37.20. Ellis Jones (Wrexham AC) finished seventh.
Spencer Jones (Wrexham AC) stepped up the age groups to compete against seniors, under-20s and under-17s at 3,000m and produced a new PB of 18:06.38.
ARTHUR BEBBINGTON TWIN PIERS 10K 2026 – COLWYN BAY, JANUARY 17
Starting from Llandudno Pier, this 10K race takes runners along the north Wales coast to Colwyn Bay Pier.
This year’s men’s race saw an all Meirionnyd Running Club podium with Owen Roberts taking the bragging rights in 31:59. Ben Harding was second in 32:59 with Gwion Roberts third in 33:56.
Fourth place overall went to Eden O’Dea (Deeside AAC) in 35:44, which also brought her the win in the women’s race.
Next home was Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) in 37:39 with Jennifer Rambaldi (Buckley RC) coming home third in 39:00.
BRITISH MILERS CLUB INDOOR MEETING – SHEFFIELD, JANUARY 18
Louis Starr (Rugby and Northampton) won the men’s 800m D final in Sheffield, crossing the line in 1:52.23. Edwards Davies (Swansea Harriers) was sixth in 1:56.81.
In the men’s 1500m C race, Josh Smith (Pontypridd Roadents) was eighth in 3:59.22, while Tamsin Seguin (Menai Track and Field) was ninth in the women’s 1500m B final in 4:55.20.
Henry Evans (Cardiff Athletics) was fourth in the men’s 3,000m C race in 8:37, while Cian Harold (Pontypridd Roadents) was seventh in 9:00.02. Sophia Harrison (Swansea Harriers) was eighth in the women’s 3,000m A race in 10:13.57.
SPEEDWAY 10K – CHEPSTOW, JANUARY 18
Felix McGrath (Bristol and West AC) claimed the win in the men’s race on Sunday with a time of 29:38. James Reeder (Team Bath) was second in 29:51 ahead of Ben Robinson (Western Tempo) in 29:52.
Winner of the female race was Megan Marchant (Western Tempo) in 33:37, from Amber Gascoigne (Team Bath) in 35:08 and Clare Hammett (Thames Hare and Hounds) in 36:10.
