Walsh breaks World Record in Grosetto

Welsh thrower Harrison Walsh smashed the F44 World shot put record in Grosseto over the weekend. He threw a massive 15.73m in his first round throw, breaking the record and seeing him place just 2nd in the mixed classification event.

Harrison turned to athletics after an injury saw his rugby career end while playing for Swansea RFC. Even though he recently picked up the shot and the discus he has already made a name for himself across both disciplines winning gold in both F44 Shot & Discuss at the BUCS Championships 2019.

When we spoke to him he said, “I'm just overwhelmed by the support I've had both in the athletic community and the rugby community. The record is amazing and totally unexpected as I wasn't aware how close I was to the mark. It's all about improvement and focusing on the process to make me the best athlete I can be. So the focus is now switched to the next competition in Holland on the weekend”

With the World Para-athletics Championships closing in fast, last weekend’s throw will put Walsh into a strong selection position for the GB team.

A massive World Record throw so early on in his season will give Harrison a great confidence boost and we could possibly see him extend this record even further later this season.

Welsh Athletics would like to say a massive congratulations to Harrison on his World Record and we wish him all the best and more success in the rest of his season.
