Welsh Team before the Swansea Half Marathon

This was the third half marathon master’s international hosted by Wales - 1 at Tenby and 2 in Swansea. As usual with home advantage giving Welsh athletes a boost we came away with more trophies than ever before.

There were far too many good performances to mention, and not only from the trophies winners, as a dozen athletes made their Welsh debut at the popular Swansea Half Marathon

First male home on the day was Adam Bowden, Bridgend AC who finished 2nd in the M40 category and 10 overall in the race and fourth overall in the master’s international

Martin Rowling Aberdare RC had a great run to finish 3rd in the M45 category and whilst Mark Jennings, MMRT, couldn’t quite match last year’s first place, he did pick up third place with a 75minute run.

After a year out, Lee Aherne, Parc Bryn Bach has picked up a couple of trophies in the last few weeks with a great second place. However, Wales totally dominated the M65 age group with our athletes filling all of the top 6 positions bar 3rd place with Ifan Lloyd, Swansea H, once again getting the better

of Dave Warren, Cardigan in a close finish. Ifan’s time of 1-20 -41 beat his own Welsh M65 record.

Dave Gibson, Ifan Lloyd, Dave Warren & Alan Davies after collecting their trophies

Last year Alan Davies, Swansea H, and David Gibson, Tri Hard Harriers finished first and second and they repeated again this year but with David Gibson still recovering after picking up a silver medal at the World Masters Marathon Championships in Cape Town, Alan won the M70 age group by an incredible 8 minutes!! Having cycled down to the course, Malcolm was delighted to pick up second place trophy with a great 1-50 effort.

First home amongst the women was debutant Rhian Maloney, MMRT who did well to finish 4th in her W35 age group. She was just ahead of Gemma Moore, Eryri H, who despite spending the previous two nights sleeping under canvas in a very windy Swansea, and having to run 3km to ensure she got to the start on time, was more than delighted to win the W40 race in 1-22-10. Hannah Thomas, Maldwyn was just outside her pb but delighted to pick up her first ever trophy at this level.

Gemma Moore, first W40

Like the men Wales dominated some of the older age groups and we had a 1 and 2 in both the W55 and W60 age groups. Tracy Jenkins, Porthcawl won the W55 age group, followed in by Niki Morgan, Chepstow whilst Elaine Whatmby, Brackla H was back to her best in winning the W60 age group followed home by Sue Watson, Les Croupiers RC. We also had fourth in both age groups with Nick Jukes, Parc Bryn Bach (W55) and Jane Roscoe, Chepstow H(W60).

If Alan Davies victory in the M70 was incredible, Lindy Geyer, TROT, was even more remarkable as she won by 9 minutes in a great time of 1-33-04!! To cap a great day Sue Graves, Hook Runners also picked up the runners-up award in the W75 age group.

Lindy Geyer the most emphatic winner on the day

A big thank you to our Team Managers Luke Northall and Caroline Jones and for the Swansea Half Marathon race organisers for hosting us again.

We quickly move onto the 5km international which will be held at Shrewsbury on 11 July. Expressions of interest are still sought for the Masters Trail Half Marathi International in the Forest of Dean in September. Further details are available below:
