Welsh Athletics is pleased to announce our new look Regional Development Programme for coaches. We recognise and value, the time and energy our coaching community put into Athletics in Wales. Moving forward we want to ensure all coaches have the opportunity to develop alongside their athletes and progress on their journey together.
Regional Development Programme Aims:
- To introduce a holistic and process focused approach to long term athlete development
- To develop coaching knowledge, skills and behaviours to support “brilliant basics” in the early stage of event group development
- To develop a collaborative and skilled coaching network across each event group in every region of Wales
- To improve coach retention and encourage developing across the pathway
- To provide a fun and engaging training environments where everyone can enjoy the Sport
The practical development days explore technical, Event Group specific and associated physical preparation content. These are also supported by a series of on-demand (online) resources around lifestyle and psychosocial themes, which are key to working with and supporting developing athletes.
This modular development opportunity is set across a 2-year period, with 6 development days where all coaches and athletes (age 14-16) can attend together (coaches can attend independently if required). See below the complete calendar of development opportunities across all event groups for the 2021-22 year. To attend these development days coaches will need to have a current coaching assistant or coaching licence.
The sessions are underpinned by an athlete competency framework which is reflective of a full complement of holistic qualities an athlete should be working towards at this stage in their development. The coach development content is shaped to mirror the athlete development needs, highlighting the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to enable the coach-athlete relationship to thrive and succeed.

Welsh Athletics endeavours to take a holistic and person-centred approach to looking after our coaching community’s well-being, and we see these development days as a platform to not only learn together, but to share in challenges and grow regional networks with the opportunity for more collaborative club projects, to support the sustainability and growth of the sport across Wales
