At the third of this year’s Master Road International’s Lee Aherne, Parc Bryn Bach, was the star of the day for Wales with an incredible one second victory in his M55 age category, which was one of the most competitive races of the night with just six seconds separating the first four athletes. Lee finished in 16-16, second was Richard Johnson, in 16-17, third Francois Rafferty 16-21 and fourth Simon Mugglestone in 16-22 (all three representing England).

The only other Welsh team member to win on the night was Bob Foreman, Matlock, in the M65 category who won by 22 seconds from Dylan Huws, Eryri. This was Bob’s second international win of the season having already won the half marathon in Manchester.

The original date of the of the race was changed so a few athletes who weren’t originally available ran for their clubs and a number of them excelled and would have medalled in their age group had they been selected but we stck with those athletes originally selected – these included: Rhodri Owen, Meirionnydd who was first M35 home in 14-27; Mike Whyatt, Eryri who won the M60 category in 16-52 and Donna Morris who was second W35 to finish on the night but would have been first in the international. Tom Roberts, Meirionnydd, who set a half marathon pb at Berlin last weekend would also have finished within the top 3 had he been selected running 14-40 on the night. It was also good to see Emma Crowe returning to racing after a number of years out with serious injury and she beat all of the Welsh team members in the W50 category.

Back to those in the international and there was some excellent running with a number of athletes setting age group pb’s on the fast Mid Cheshire course. Top three trophies were won by Ryan Davis, Wrexham in the M35 whilst setting a new pb of 14-54. Ewelina Ciesielska, Les Croupiers finished 3rd in the W35 age group. Sarah Heath, Spirit of Monmouth, ran a superb race to finish second in 20-44.

It was another great International against England and there is still the Marathon to conclude the 2024 programme. That will take place in Chester on 6th October 2024. Teams have already been selected. Next year there will be internationals at 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon as well as a Trail Half Marathon International and for the first time Northern Ireland and the Armed Forces will be joining us for some of the fixtures.
