At the 35th British & Irish Masters Cross Country International in Belfast on Saturday 16th November 2024, Ifan Lloyd (Swansea Harriers) finally achieved a long term ambition of his when he won a gold medal in the M65 race.
Ifan’s race was the first of the day and he set off determined to win after securing the runner up spot in the M60 race last year. Having won the World Masters marathon title a month ago on his 65th birthday and also setting a new British record, Ifan knew he was in good shape and he gradually pulled away from all of his competitors to win comfortably by over 100 metres. Gordon Jones, (Prestatyn) backed Ifan up with a great 7th place in the same age group.
It was Wales’ only medal on the day but there were some other great runs with Joanne Henderson (Denbigh Harriers) repeating her 4th place of last year in the W45 category. Dave Warren, (Cardigan RC) had a good run in the M60 category and was delighted to beat World Masters half marathon bronze medalist Steve Watmough as he finished in an excellent 6th place.
Sarah Heath (Spirit of Monmouth) also finished in 6th place in the W60 race. Huw Evans (Parc Bryn Bach) always targets this race and was another to make the top ten finishing in 8th in the M50 category. M75 Barrie Parham (Griffithstown) also finished in 8th place. The final top 10 finisher was Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) who finished in 10 in the W40 category.
