What an 8 days it was for Welsh Athletes in Birmingham – from the Marathon runners on day one, to the 5000m women at the end of day nine, there were wonderful performances from across the team.
Welsh Athletes held their own amongst the top athletes in the world. There was a British Record in the 10,000m Race walk from Heather Lewis, and a new Welsh Record over 1500m for Jake Heyward, whose 3.31.08 clocking now puts him 8th on the UK all time list behind Steve Ovett. Jeremiah Azu was the first home nations athlete in the men’s 100m in a high-class field with athletes from eight different nations represented – all four who finished ahead of Jeremiah have run under 10 seconds this season. Clara Evans was first home nations athlete home in the women’s marathon,

Athletics was the biggest and most competitive sport at Birmingham 2022. It attracted competitors from the widest range of Commonwealth countries with over 60 nations competing and 32 different nations winning athletics medals - three times more than in any other sport at the games. This no doubt contributed to the fantastic crowds who turned out in force for every session to support with plenty of Welsh flags and tops proudly on show throughout the week which was commented on by all the athletes. Thanks to all who came to support and share the atmosphere of 'the friendly games'.
