A Weekend of Personal Bests in Sheffield, Barcelona and Armagh

BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships, Sheffield – Feb 14-16

Across the weekend, Welsh athletes competed for their universities at the BUCS Nationals Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield with a host of strong performances.

Adele Nicoll took her 8th consecutive BUCS Shot Put title with a throw of 15.76. Remi Adebiyi gave everything in the 1500m, falling across the line, to take the gold medal.

Hannah Brier has shown good form, gaining a new indoor 200m personal best of 23.94 to take silver in the final. Sprinter Kris Jones helped Loughborough win gold in the 4x200m relay whilst Joe Brier helped the Cardiff Met relay team to take bronze.

In the 3000m, Lauren Cooper ran a smart and controlled race to take a new personal best and a silver medal.

Barcelona Half Marathon, Barcelona, Spain – Feb 16

Across the pond, Kris Jones and Josh Griffiths ran new personal bests in the Barcelona Half Marathon, finishing 22nd and 29th  respectively.

Charlotte Arter was the first Welsh women home just shy of her personal best - 70min exactly - but fellow Welsh runner Clara Evans came in just afterwards with a new personal best of 72:29.

Paul Graham of Pontypridd Roadents also ran a strong race, setting a new personal best of 66:33, with further good performances from  Mike Kallenburg of Cardiff AC who ran a personal best, Ben Butler-Maddon of Pontrypridd Roadents, Nick Griffiths from Amman Valley and Rachel Davies from Swansea Harriers.

Armagh 5K, Armagh, Ireland – Feb 13

Three Welsh teams made the journey to compete at the Armah International Road Races last week with the teams running some impressive times.

In the Women’s 3K race, The Welsh team were led home by Bronwen Owen in 5th, finishing in a quick 9:11. She was followed by Anna Bracegirdle in 30th and Kate Seary 35th

In the Men’s 5K race, our men's development team were led home by Sam Roberts who ran a new personal best of 14:42. Osian Perrin also ran a new personal best in 14:42 as well as Ben Reynolds in 14:48 and Morgan James in 15:36.

In the Men’s 5K race, Wales' men were led home by Jonathon Hopkins in 11th running a new personal best of (13:53. He was followed by James Hunt, who also ran a pb, in 13:58. Dewi Griffiths also showed he was returning to form, finishing in 14:20 with Andrew Davies just following behind him in 14:21, which is a new pb for him too.

There was also a strong performance by James Vincent who ran 14:36 and Marc Hobbs who finished in just behind in 14:38.

Dominic Smith from Swansea Harriers also had a good race finishing in 14:43.

Ras Cors Caron Half Marathon, Tregaron – Jan 19

Pembrokeshire Harriers runner Lee Shannon was the first Welshman home in 1:17.22. He was followed by James Farmer of Aberystwyth Uni Harriers in 1:22.20

In the Women’s race, Llinos Jones from Swansea Harriers was the first woman home in 1:29.06. She was followed by Sarn Helen runner Dee Jolly in 1:35.14.
