Three Welsh athletes have been selected to #represent Great Britain at Under 23 level in the European Throwing Cup on the 10th & 11th March in Portugal. All 3 will be earning their first U23 GB vests and will be part of an 11 strong British team heading out. Athletes selected are:
Sarah Omoregie (Cardiff AAC) – Shot
Bethan Rees (Cannock & Stafford) – Javelin
Jac Palmer (Cardiff AAC) – Hammer
Sarah, who tops the UK U20 rankings in 2018 with her 14.88m from the UK indoor Championships, was delighted when she received the news:
"I was so happy when I heard, its my first GB vest, I was just sat in the car when the call came in, it was really unexpected. I'm still under 20, so it will be a step up, but i've had plenty of competition already this season, and have the U20 Indoor International this weekend to get some more competition practice in."
Bethan, second in the UK rankings last year but yet to have the chance to compete this year, will be looking to build on the 49.56m she threw in the British Championships last summer. The Welsh U20 record, held by Lianne Clarke (Neath) of 50.95m may well be in her sights this year.
Jac, who competed in a international meet in Lieria last July, where he finished fourth with a throw of 64.43m, is looking forward to seeing what he can do in warmer weather, having got within a metre of his PB last weekend in below freezing conditions;
"I'll be comfortable with the surroundings having been to Lieria twice before, and I know I can be competitive out there at this level. I feel my selection reflects the hard work being put in by me and the team, including my Dad (Adrian Palmer), Osian, Carys and our physio, Liba. Hammer throwing in Wales is strong right now, its inspiring to see people I train with heading out to the Commonwealth Games, and I'm really excited about this opportunity to pull on the GB vest again."
