KIP KEINO CLASSIC – NAIROBI, KENYA, APRIL 20

A following wind of 2.2m/s – a breath over the legal limit – denied Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics) a new 100m personal best and Welsh record on Saturday night.

Azu clocked 10.00 in pouring rain at the Nyayo National Stadium as he finished third behind America’s Olympic 200m silver medallist Kenny Bednarek (9.91) and Liberia’s Emmanuel Matadi (9.99).

The Marco Airale-coached athlete’s current Welsh record stands at 10.04, while he has a wind-assisted best of 9.90.

Azu’s performance in the rain at the Continental Tour Gold event bodes well for the rest of the season with the UKA Olympic standard for the 100m at the Paris games set at 10.00.
