It has not been long since the dust settled on the 2017 outdoor season, but this weekend will bring about the opening fixture of the 2017-18 indoor season, the Welsh Athletics and Welsh Schools Athletic Association Combined Events Championships. The fixture falls on a new weekend in the calendar this year to fall in line with the earlier date of the Schools Combined Events International in Glasgow on November 10th.
U18 and U16 athletes will compete in a Pentathlon whilst the U14 athletes will compete in a Quadrathlon with athletes in schools years 6 and 7 also contesting the U13 Age Group Welsh Combined Events Championships.
The field is led by many of the athletes who achieved selection for last year’s international in Athlone, Ireland. The U18 Girls age group looks to be hotly contested. Two of last year’s medallists have stepped up to the U20 age group and so Josie Sivak (Steve Ingram) will look to upgrade the bronze medal she won last year. Hot on her heels will be the likes of Emily Thomas (Nigel Lewis), Taiya Jones (Francis Baker) and last year’s U16 Champion (both indoors and outdoors) Grace Morgan (Nigel Lewis).
The U18 Boys age group will feature the likes of 2016 silver medallist Harri Wheeler-Sexton and 2017 outdoor silver medallist Thomas Britt (Ed Thompson).
Leading the charge in the U16 age groups looks to be Carys Poole (Tony Morris) and Ben Hillman (Helen James). Ben will be looking to carry forward his exception form from 2017 that saw him win the U15 England Athletics Outdoor Combined Events Championships.
Action will begin in the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff from 11.00, with registrations opening from 09.15 and closing at 09.45 - we look forward to seeing you all there!
Good luck to all / Pob Lwc pawb!
