British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships Report

British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships - Saturday 8th September - Glendalough, Ireland 

There was more individual gold medal success for Wales in the British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships at Glendalough, Ireland on Saturday. The overnight and early morning rain cleared in time for the start of the under 17’s race, though, the ground conditions were wet and slippery in places, Running on a straight up and down 4.7km/234m course, Mike Spill (Menai T&F) ran very well to finish 2nd overall in a time of 19:22 behind Scotland’s Sunny McGrath (18:57), with Joe Reardon (Aberdare) 7th in 20:18. Finishing in 15th was Daniel Stones (Menai; 21:11) and in 18th was Cai La Trobe-Roberts (Menai; 21:47). Wales u17 Men finished in 3rd place to win team bronze.

The u17 women were running in the same race and there was individual gold medal success for Wales with Samia Jones (Menai) winning in a time of 22:14 ahead of Scotland’s Pippa Carcas 22:35. Next in for Wales in 6th place was Eden O’Dea (Wrexham) 23:14, with Emily Hanlon (Colwyn Bay) 17th in 24:11 and Lleucu Lane (Menai) 19th in 26:14. Along with the men, Wales u17 women also won team bronze.

In the u20 women's 6.7km/338m straight up and down race, Annabelle McQueen won individual bronze in a time of 33:51 as the U/20 women also won team bronze thanks to Holly Roberts (Colwyn Bay; 12th place - 36:04), Jenna Bagnall (Prestatyn; 15th - 38:23) and Megan Bowen (Cardiff; 19th - 40:06). Wales u20 men were led home by Tom Wood (Eryri) who was 14th in 29:28, with Max Dunford (St Davids College) 18th in 30:06, Cedol Dafydd (Menai)21st in 31:04 and Ifan Oldfield (Wrexham)22nd in 31:18.

Samia’s individual Gold medal success is a continuation, since 2007, of female gold medal success for Wales. Elinor Kirk won Wales first female individual gold medal at the event. Since 2007, Welsh female athletes have won 8 individual gold medals, including Elinor, Ffion Price (2 x u17 & 2 x u20), Megan Carter-Davies, Bronwen Jenkinson as Samia adds her name to that list.
