ABP Newport Wales 10k & Marathon
Fresh from his 3,000m Steeplechase on the Gold Coast, Cardiff AAC’s Ieuan Thomas stormed to victory at the ABP Newport Wales 10k on Sunday morning. In blustery conditions, Ieuan ran an excellent time of 29:43 to take victory by over a minute from Morgan Davies (Swansea Harriers) who was second in 30:55 and Abed Teweldebrhan (Newport Harriers) who finished third in 31:32. Rachel Felton (Shaftesbury Barnet) ran to victory in similarly dominant fashion in the women’s 10k, as she crossed the line in 35:04, ahead of second placed Emma Stepto (East Cornwall, 36:09) and Cardiff’s Lucy Marland who ran a personal best of 36:17.
The women’s marathon race was dominated by Natasha Cockram (MMRT) as she ran a huge personal best of 2:44:58 to take victory ahead of second placed Andrea Rowlands (Eryri Harriers, 2:59:00) and Carla Swithenbank, who was third in 3:02:06. Neath Harrier James Carpenter won a thrilling race in the men’s marathon as he crossed the line in a huge personal best of 2:33:32, less than a minute ahead of second placed Jonathan Barnes (Cheltenham and County) who also ran a big personal best of 2:34:13. Finishing in third place was Luke Williams (San Domenico RC) with a time of 2:37:22.
Cardiff Summer Series 1 Mile Race – Friday 27th April
The first race of the Summer Series calendar got underway on Friday evening, with the Cardiff Summer Series 1 Mile Race taking place in Pontcanna Fields. Cardiff AAC stalwart James Thie was victorious in the men’s race as he produced an excellent performance to win in 4:29 (missing his athlete Tom Marshall’s course record by one second), with Luke Williams (San Domenico RC) second in 4:37 and David J Williams (Les Croupiers) third in 4:50. In the women’s race it was Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) who was victorious in 5:27, with Katie Beecher (Les Croupiers) second in 5:52 and Heledd Roberts (San Domenico RC) third in 5:57.
Appalachian Athletic Conference, North Carolina, USA – Friday 27th April
Emily Kearney (Wirral AC) doubled up in the 800m and 1,500m at the Appalachian Athletic Conference meeting over in the United States. Kearney ran to a personal best time of 2:14:37 to win the 800m and ran a season’s best time of 4:35 to win the 1,500m with two fine performances.
Penn Relays – Philadelphia, USA – Saturday 28th April
Rhianwedd Price (Cardiff AAC) competed at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Saturday, finishing 6th in the women’s 1,500m in a time of 4:50:71.
