Friday 8th February, 2019

A number of Wales' top athletes will head to the Arena Birmingham this weekend for the SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships, which will also serve as the trials for the European Indoor Athletics Championships (1-3 March) in Glasgow.

Wales will have a strong representation in the sprints events, with the trio of medallists from the Women's 60m Welsh Championship race set to compete, in Shannon Malone (Loughborough Students; Glyn Hawkes) Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers; Glyn Hawkes) and Mica Moore (Birchfield Harriers; Lawrence Moore). Meanwhile in the Men's 60m, Welsh Junior Champion Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff AAC; Helen James) and Sam Gordon (Cardiff AAC; Matt Elias) will look to challenge for places in Saturday evening's Final.

The Women's 200m will see Amy Odunaiya (Wrexham; David Norton) and Welsh Senior Champion Melissa Roberts (Birchfield Harriers; Matt Elias) compete, with a quartet of Welsh men set for the 200m in Lemarl Freckleton (Swansea Harriers; Kevin Williams), Kristian Jones (Cardiff AAC; Glyn Hawkes), Ben Paris (Swansea Harriers; Joseph McDonnell) and Tom Williams (Barry & Vale; Thomas Meyer).

Training partners Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers; Matt Elias) and Owen Smith (Cardiff AAC; Matt Elias) will hope to perform strongly in the Men's 400m, whilst Commonwealth Games representative Rowan Axe (Cardiff AAC; Craig Winrow) will go in the Men's 1,500m.

Current World Leader Melissa Courtney (Poole AC; Rob Denmark) will look to secure her spot at the European Championships in the Women's 3,000m, whilst Commonwealth Bronze Medallist Bethan Davies (Cardiff AAC; Andi Drake) and Gold Coast teammate Heather Lewis (Pembrokeshire; Martin Bell) will go in the Women's 5k Race Walk.

Jake Heyward (Cardiff AAC; James Thie) will compete in a competitive Men's 3,000m field, whilst Welsh trio Adele Nicoll (Birchfield; Ryan Spencer-Jones), Sarah Omoregie (Cardiff AAC; Gareth Lease) and Sabrina Fortune (Deeside AAC; Ian Robinson) are set to compete in the Women's Shot Put.

Good luck to all the Welsh athletes competing at the Championships this weekend.
