WSAA Inter Schools XC (inc Welsh Colleges Championships) - Penlan Arena, Brecon - Saturday 17th November
Athletes from over 70 schools and colleges across Wales numbering well over 500 will line up in Brecon on Saturday for the annual Inter Schools Cross Country competition, writes Steve Jones. The event will again incorporate the Welsh Colleges Championships. A new course is being used due to the construction of the new Brecon High School. Athletes are advised to arrive early to give sufficient time to walk the course and inspect conditions.
The programme gets underway at 1.15 when the Under 13 Girls line up, the final race gets underway at 3pm when the Senior Boys (school years 11 to 14) have last use of the course. The races incorporate a team competition with the leading 4 athletes scoring for their schools.
The Under 13s races tend to be wide open, offering opportunity for our Year 7 & 8 athletes to get themselves noticed and experience high quality competition. The Under 15 Girls should see Moli Lyons (Bro Morgannwg), Daisy Thompson (Bro Myrddin) and Abigail Davies (Porthcawl) well up and in contention.
All 4 of the Bro Myrddin entries in the Under 15 Boys are likely to be to the fore, they will renew rivalry with Ben Reynolds (Y Gwyndy) and the improving Math Thomas (Dyffryn Conwy) who did so well in the Under 13s race last year.
It is difficult to look beyond Nia Clatworthy (Porthcawl) in the Senior Girls race although a fit again Aimee Callow (Glantaf) is sure to present a stern test. Ellie Robinson (Cardiff & Vale College) probably starts as favourite in the Colleges event. Ben Thomas (Ysgol Y Strade) is back to defend his title from 2017 in the Senior Boys ensuring that podium places will be hard fought. Last year’s Under 15 winner Rhys James (Dwr Y Felin) is also in the field along with Cwm Rhymni duo Dafyd Jay and Ben Reynolds, Lloyd Sheppard (Blackwood), Joe Reardon (Rhydywaun) and last year’s surprise package Finley Hines (Ystalyfera).
Good luck to all entered on Saturday.
Spectator parking is at Brecon High School and spectators are asked not to take dogs beyond the hedge and onto loop C of the course.
