Welsh Athletics are pleased to announce that a total of 21 athletes will be supported to compete at the British Athletics Cross Challenge and European Cross Country Trials at Liverpool's Sefton Park on Saturday. Although there is no official international match, Welsh Athletics see this as an important international opportunity for those athletes selected to compete as part of a Welsh team.
The Senior Men's team includes Cardiff Cross Challenge winner Charlie Hulson (Liverpool Harriers), whilst Commonwealth Half Marathon representatives Dewi Griffiths and Kris Jones will represent Swansea Harriers in the Inter-Clubs competition.
Gold Coast bronze medallist Melissa Courtney (Poole) makes her cross-country season debut for the Senior Women's team, and is joined by fellow Commonwealth representative Jenny Nesbitt and in-form duo Charlotte Arter (Cardiff AAC) and Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix).
The Junior Men's team includes two athletes who've already taken British Athletics Cross Challenge victories this season in Jake Heyward (Cardiff AAC) and Matt Willis (Wrexham AC), whilst Swansea's Cari Hughes, who was third at the Cardiff Cross Challenge, will be hopeful of another strong performance as she races as part of the Junior Women's team.
Welsh athletes have performed well in Liverpool over the past few years, and strong representation within British Athletics' teams for the European Cross Country Championships is very much the target once more.
Congratulations to all the athletes selected - we also very much acknowledge the role played by clubs and coaches in the development of these athletes.
