Wednesday 21st November, 2018

8th European Vertical Jumps Conference - Cologne, Germany - 9th - 11th November 2018

The European Vertical Jumps Conference (Pole Vault and High Jump) was attended by Welsh coaches Stephen Bailey and Owen Chesher together with Denis Doyle (North Wales Coach and Athlete Support Officer) in a large contingent of coaches from Welsh Athletics, England Athletics and British Athletics, which contributed to some 200 delegates from across Europe.

With a conference focus on periodisation and cross discipline learning, the first session was a Career Report from Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Fabien Hambuchen, covering appropriate planning, dealing with pressure, handling disappointment and perseverance.

The cross discipline theme was continued on Saturday with a very interesting and challenging presentation and practical session from Olympic Judoka Roman Jahoda (also works with Austrian FA and Austrian Davis Cup tennis) on constructing effective mobilisation, core strength and core stability routines He promoted a strong emphasis on hip mobility and thoracic  spine mobility /stability. This conference had a large practical element, with Olympic Coach Tamas Kiss demonstrating some of his high jump drills with the German Olympian Maries–Laurence Jungflieshe.

Further sessions saw a very helpful presentation on current trends in periodisation from hammer thrower and academic Martin Bingisser, and more practical work on dynamic high jump warm up and drills from Italian U20 team coach Guilio Ciotti. He placed a high emphasis on movement /execution quality Sunday and finished with an IAAF report on the biomechanical findings from the London World Championships – an opportunity to see in detail the range of technique /approaches applied by elite jumpers.

Stephen Bailey commented, "This was the most readily accessible European Jumps Conference I have attended, with the highest amount of practical input. I have been able to take away a large amount of information which I can apply directly to the development of athletes in my group"
