Weekend Round-Up - 30th June & 1st July

British Athletics Championships – Birmingham – Saturday 30th June & Sunday 1st July

It proved to be a successful weekend of action for welsh athletes competing at the British Athletics Championships at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. A total of eight medals were won (3 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze) with four new personal best performances recorded.

European Mountain Running Championships – Skopje, Macedonia – Sunday 1st July

Welsh duo Bronwen Jenkinson (Eryri Harriers) and Heidi Davies (Brecon AC) helped British Athletics’ Senior Women’s team to a bronze medal at the European Mountain Running Championships in Skopje, Macedonia on Sunday morning. Bronwen finished 12th in the 11km race in 59:19 and came home as the second British runner, whilst Heidi finished 35th in 1:04:35 and came home as the fourth British runner as the British team finished 3rd overall behind France and the Czech Republic.

Night of Endurance inc Welsh 10,000m Championships – Cardiff – Saturday 30th June

The Night of Endurance took place at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Saturday evening, as runners were treated to ideal conditions and a brilliant atmosphere for their respective 10k and 1 Mile races. The Welsh 10,000m title was won by Swansea’s Matt Rees, who high-fived the large crowds down the home straight on his way to victory in 32:28. Finishing in 2nd place in Race 1 was Jack Hutchens (NDAC) in 32:31, with Daniel Carpenter (Enfield & Haringey) finishing 3rd in 32:36. Picking up Silver in the Welsh 10,000m Championships, running 32:52 was Tom Griffiths (Guildford & Godalming), whilst Samuel Richards (Pontypridd Roadents) won the bronze medal with 33:05.

The fastest female 10k time of the evening was recorded by Les Croupiers’ Janneke Van Beijnum who ran 42:08 in Race 2, and it was her teammate Claire Jacobs who won the Welsh 10,000m title with 43:06 in Race 3. Angela Champion (Les Croupiers) ran 45:21 to take silver in the welsh championship and Catherine Barker (Penarth & Dinas) won the bronze medal with 46:08. The fastest mile times of the evening were recorded by Peter Grist (Frome Running Club) with 4:41 and Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) with 5:18.
