Over 30 of North Wales Junior Endurance Athletes and 5 Coaches undertook the latest Development Day, based at the David Hughes Leisure Centre, Menai Bridge.
With representative athletes and coaches from Deeside AC, Wrexham AC, Colwyn Bay AC, Maldwyn Harriers and Prestatyn Running Club travelling to meet their Menai colleagues, the day commenced with an easy 2K warm up run. The group were then split into two groups and undertook a full range of S & C exercises in the gym and a Pilates session, led by Donna Welsh.
Following a short, light lunch break, the athletes ran the 1 and a half miles to the Treborth track, taking in the historic Menai Bridge as they did so, where they were again split into two groups and under the guidance of Coaches John Messum and Neil Edwards, were put through a track session to test both speed and endurance, specifically set by Welsh Athletics Head Of Endurance, Chris Jones.
The session consisted of 2 sets of 6 - 8 X 150M runs at target 800m pace plus 2 x 600 – 800M reps at target 3k pace, concentrating on even paced delivery.
Despite a strong breeze, the athletes performed admirably, before making the return trek back to the Leisure Centre.
Another great, successful get together with excellent camaraderie, ahead of the athletes now locking horns in battle over the coming weeks, as we enter the business end of the cross country season.
The next Development Day is planned for early Spring.
