It was an early start to the indoor season, but the joint Welsh Athletics & Welsh Schools Athletic Association Combined Events Championships certainly did not disappoint with two Championship Best performances.
Dewi Mock took the U14 boys Championship ahead of Toks Akanbi – Mortimer (Fyn Corcoran) who’s performance was boosted by a personal best performance of 4.56m in the Long Jump. The U13 Boys title went to Sean Hopkins who produced 3 personal bests across the Quadrathlon.
Ellie-Mae Wainwright (Darryn McAtee) was a clear winner of the U14 Girls Championship as the only athlete to surpass the 2000 point mark. The U13 Girls Championship then went to Amber Pearn, who recorded two personal bests in the Long Jump and the 800m.
Competition was fierce in the U16 and U18 age groups as selection for the Schools Combined Events International was at stake.
Ben Hillman (Francis Baker) stole the show in the U16 Boys category, securing a commanding win as the only athlete over the 3000 point barrier; also breaking his brother’s Championship Record in the process.
Carys Poole (Tony Morris) went into the final event of the U16 Girls competition 3 points adrift of Caitlyn Mapps (Phil Warwicker), but ran a dominant 800m in a personal best time of 2:30.76 to take the title in her first year in the U16 age group.
Harri Wheeler-Sexton (Francis Baker) was the standout performer in the U18 Boys competition; again, the only athlete to surpass the 3000 point barrier. Daniel Murathodzic (Matt Wood) and Thomas Britt (Ed Thompson) closely contested the silver and bronze medals. They were separated by only 3 points going into the 800m, and it was Daniel Murathodzic that edged out Thomas Britt by 8 hundredths of a second to clinch the silver.
Taiya Jones (Francis Baker) had an exceptional competition, producing personal bests across all 5 events to take the U18 Girls title and also a championship record. Grace Morgan (Nigel Lewis) and Emilie Davies (Steve Boyles) were the silver and bronze medallists respectively, both who are only in their first year at the U18 age group. Grace also produced a championship best performance in the 60m Hurdles.
Athletes will now be selected for the Schools Combined Events International in Glasgow on 10th November. Welsh Athletics would like to take this opportunity to wish those athletes selected the best of luck.
In addition, we would like to thank all officials and volunteers who contributed to the running of Saturday’s Championships.
