The streets of London will be packed with spectators once again this weekend with the first ever Festival of Race Walks in IAAF World Championship history due to be held on Sunday. The men’s and women’s 50km & 20km races will take place on one of the most famous roads in the world in The Mall with a 2km loop course between Buckingham Palace and Admiralty Arch.
Bethan Davies (Andi Drake) of Cardiff AAC will be making her major championship debut in the women’s 20km and will certainly been one to watch out for. The Cardiff based athlete has had a phenomenal year which has included winning the British 5000m Walk Title and breaking the British all-time Record in the process. Bethan finished 2nd in the World Championships qualifier in Leeds in June which cemented her place in the Great Britain team for this weekend’s Championship race. The former Leeds University student has been in impressive form this year after setting personal bests in the 1 Mile (Road), 5000m (Track), 5km (Road) and 20km (Road) which is the event she will be competing in.
We caught up with Bethan this week and this is what she had to say:
“My preparation has been going really well. I've soaked up a lot of new experiences and made some promising progress in both training and competition this year. I am excited to see what I can do this Sunday but as it's my first Major Champs it's mainly about gaining experience. My first taste of an international race walk was on the Mall in London 2012 where I watched from the sidelines so to have made it onto the startline is pretty special and I'm thrilled to be able to share it with all my family and friends!”
