Welsh Athletics is delighted to announce its membership has exceeded 12,000 for the first time.
This is a very exciting period for athletics in Wales as we celebrate a number of significant achievements and increments across all areas of the sport.
Reflecting on the membership increase, Chris Moss, Development Manager, commented;
"In 2013 we announced that we had an ambition to ‘double club membership’ and take it from 6,500 to 13,000 by 2020. I am delighted that we are on course to achieve that and achieve it ahead of schedule. Less than 4 years ago we were excited to announce that our membership had exceeded 8000 for the first time, it shows how far we have come in recent years.
We have seen both an increase in the number of people joining clubs as well as the number of clubs formally affiliating. What is also great to see is that clubs across Wales extending and improving their offer in order to develop a wider, more diverse membership base."
This growth that we see in club membership is also reflected in the growth of the sport in both social and recreational settings. We have seen an increase on the number of young people accessing the sport in school and education settings as well as the number of adults engaging in group activities and events across the country. Social running is also on the increase and, through the Run Wales Social Running programme, we are engaging with more groups and individuals than ever before.
How the numbers stack up:
- 12,200 members, up 10% from the same period in 2017.
- 108 affiliated clubs in Wales
Chris Moss, went onto explain;
"Naturally this membership growth means that we need to increase and improve the support that we provide for clubs. In order to support this increase in membership and help ensure that it is sustainable we have launched a progressive Club Modernisation’ programme which will give the opportunity to all clubs in Wales to continue to thrive."
