Pembrokeshire Harriers would like to say thank you and congratulations to longstanding coach Pete Freeman the 2016 Endurance Participation Coach of the Year. Pete has been involved with athletics in Pembrokeshire for several decades. Firstly, with Preseli Harriers and then at the birth of Pembrokeshire Harriers from 2001. He is a middle distance and cross country coach of great dedication and is currently involved in the Welsh national and regional coaching programme. Over the years he has helped to develop a large number of exceptional athletes the latest being Matthew Williams who is excelling in the middle distances. Outside of coaching he is also the driving force behind the Pembrokeshire Primary Schools cross country event which develops in stature and numbers each year, attracting over 1000 young athletes to the fields around Oakwood Leisure Park.

Alistair Griffiths of Llanelli AC has been awarded the Track & Field Participation Coach of the Year for 2016. Alistair has been involved in athletics for over 40 years and coaching within the sport in excess of 30 years during which time, he has encouraged children of all ages and abilities to get involved and enjoy the sport.  He freely gives up all of his spare time not only for coaching, but for travelling to competitions, officiating and also fulfils a senior officer role within his club Llanelli AC. Our next ‘Volunteer Star / Sêr Gwirfoddoli’ is Neal Merry of Swansea Harriers recently recognised as Track & Field Performance Coach of the Year for 2016 as part of the Welsh Athletics National Awards programme. Three of the athletes Neal coaches have been ranked in the Junior UK top 10, and all three of those gained GB vests in 2016. Rhodri Williams took almost 3 seconds off his 400mH PB to gain selection for the GB Juniors at the Loughborough International, Hannah Brier was an integral part of the GB Junior team at both Loughborough and the World Junior Championships, and Joe Brier gained his first GB vest at the Manchester International after a successful season which included a big 400m PB, winning the Welsh Senior Championships and a gold at the Welsh Schools Championships. Neal has also shared his expertise when being asked to be a team staff coach for the Welsh team at the Welsh Athletics U20 Indoor International.

Picking up the 2016 award of Endurance Performance Coach of the Year for the second successive year is Kevin Evans and his club Carmarthen and District Harriers AC would like to say a big “thank you and congratulations” to Kevin for all his time and commitment over the years.  Having produced a host of international athletes over the last 25 years Kevin has continued to excel as a coach of both club level and elite athletes alike. Pont-y-Pwl and District Runners would like to say a big “Thank You” to club leader Nick Card.

Nick supports First Steps Group every Monday, helping beginner runners build up their fitness and confidence. Over the winter, Nick set up another group meeting on a Wednesday for those who wanted to train for the Cardiff Half Marathon. Also - Nick helped set up, and is one of the event Directors at Pontypool Junior parkrun. Nick has also undergone training for first aid, Leadership in Running Fitness and regularly volunteers at club races.

Blaenau Gwent AC would like to say a big “Thank You” to Chairman Dean Turner.

Not only is he a valuable coach to Blaenau Gwent AC (BGAC) but he is also chair of the club which means he offers a lot of his spare time attending various meetings (WA, YDL, East Wales etc.), declaring athlete list for athletic events, organising team/committee meetings, completing grant forms, etc. He has also volunteered himself as chair of the East Wales Council which means he spends a great deal of his spare time organising the team. BGAC has made huge progress since Dean has taken over as Chair, last year being the club's best ever year.

Without Deans commitment and determination we would also not have been able to host various events for the first time in the history of the club – the Blaenau Gwent open meeting, Gwent Cross Country League in Monmouth, co-hosting SEWL league in Cardiff and we are also hosting the YDL lower age group meeting in Newport – a huge achievement for such a small club. Furthermore next autumn we are once again hosting the Gwent league fixture in Monmouth which will incorporate the East Wales champs, all of this driven by Dean.
