Track and Field

International Competitions Programme: Track and Field

The overall objective of the international competitions programme is to prepare Welsh athletes to perform at the best of their ability at major Championship events; principally the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Championships.  However, there should also be opportunities for athletes in their development years to experience the pride associated with wearing a Welsh.  Having a clear international competition pathway for athletes aged U16 to Senior is a key feature of the international competitions programme.

In the 2015-19 cycle, there will be a clear distinction between;

  1. International matches
  2. International overseas fixtures

International Matches

These events are classified as events where a Welsh team is fielded in a competitive fixture against other teams.  There will be minimum standards eligibility requirement set to ensure that achieving a Welsh vest retains a certain level of quality.  There will also be greater importance placed on finishing positions at Welsh Championship events in order to qualify for international matches.  The annual international match pathway for track and field events can be seen in table 1.

International Overseas Fixtures

These fixtures provide opportunities for Welsh athletes, who have achieved the international fixtures standards, to attend overseas competitions that offer a conducive environment to achieving a good performance outcome.  This includes the following;

  1. Appropriately competitive level of opposition
  2. Performance conducive conditions
  3. Performance conducive organisation / athlete support

This will afford the appropriate athletes the chance to experience international travel to competition and all that goes with the associated preparation for such fixtures.

These events will be supplemented by international opportunities for events not catered for by these fixtures (e.g. walks, combined events, some throwing events etc.).

Selection for each of these matches will be done by the appointed Overseas International Fixtures Selection Panel as follows;

  1. The Head of Coaching and Performance
  2. Two representatives of the Coaching and Performance Team
  3. The performance logistics coordinator (non-voting)

Generally, athletes will be offered between one and three international opportunities per year, depending on the year in the cycle and the priority level of the athlete
