Cardiff AAC’s Ieuan Thomas got the better of 2014 champion Josh Griffiths to win the Welsh 5k Championships in Tredegar on Saturday evening.
Thomas, who last won the Welsh 5k title in 2012, hadn’t raced since February because of injury but returned to take a convincing win in 14:42 despite the wet and windy conditions.
Last year’s winner Griffiths took the silver medal with Bristol and West AC’s Owain Jones third in 15:14, ahead of Swansea Harriers duo Marc Hobbs (15:21) and Chris Carpanini (15:22).
Swansea secured the men’s team title ahead of rivals Cardiff with Neath Harriers taking bronze.
In the women’s race there was a surprise win for Brecon AC’s Heidi Davies, pictured below.
The race was led by Swansea Harriers’ Kate Roberts for the first 3km but mountain specialist Davies took control in the later stages and took her first senior 5k title in 17:45, with Roberts second in 18:00.
Pontypridd Roadents AC’s Clara Evans won the bronze medal in 18:44, with Cardiff AAC taking the overall team title and Lliswerry Runners winning silver and Parc Bryn Bach Running Club the bronze.
