The first race of the 2010 Welsh Athletics Mountain Running Championships, incorporated into the Ras Y Moelwyns race at Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday 17th April, turned out to be a stroll for Eryri’s Richard Roberts as he comfortably won the 10.5m/2800ft race in ideal dry & sunny weather conditions with a time of 1:19:20. Event Preview

Richard Roberts running in Moelwyns 2009Described as being a “proper mountain race”, the Ras y Moelwyns is an arduous event run from Blaenau Ffestiniog over the three peaks of Moelwyn Mawr, Moelwyn Bach and Moel Yr Hydd – ten and a half miles (16km) with a heck of a lot of ups and downs – 2800ft of climbing.

The race, now in its 28th year, was initially organized to raise money for the local football team, Blaenau Amateurs FC but has become an event in its own right. In 2005, the race was a counter in the FRA British Mountain Running Championships.

Pre-race favourite has to be course record holder Tim Davies (Mercia), though Eryri’s Richard Roberts will be hoping to put up a challenge and make up for missing out on the outright Welsh Athletics Mountain Running Championships title last year following a thrilling race off against Mynydd Du’s Martin Shaw in the final race of the series at Brecon Beacons which saw Martin use his local knowledge to good effect to win the race and the outright championships.

In the ladies section, it is unclear if course record holder and now Isle of Man based (Eryri Harrier) Jackie Lee will compete, but her club colleague Andrea Rowlands is sure to be amongst the front runners.
