Performance Pathways

Athlete Support Pathways

The purpose of the athlete support pathway is to provide various forms of assistance to talented Welsh athletes as they progress and develop in the sport.  The guiding principle behind this is to enhance the chances of success by Welsh athletes on the international stage.  The two main drivers behind this;

i. Generate more Welsh athlete success at future Commonwealth Games

ii. Produce more Welsh athletes capable of representing Great Britain

This two strand approach is therefore reflected in the way that all of the support systems are put together and applied.  The first part of that process is recognising that the Welsh support programmes form part of a UK support pathway that includes multiple tiers as depicted in the diagram below.

Athlete Support Pathway – UK and Wales

Within the support programmes that are controlled by Welsh Athletics, the diagram below summarises the different levels of support available to Welsh, the approximate age of the athletes in each category and the approximate numbers that could expect to be supported on an annual basis.  This will be modified throughout the four year cycle to meet the specific aims and objectives of the coaching and performance strategy.

Welsh Athletics’ Athlete Support Pathway

Within each of those bands of support, the following criteria will apply;

CWG Podium and Great Britain Potential

This level of the athlete support pathway offers financial assistance and various forms of performance resource support to those athletes who have the best potential to either;

      i.            Win a medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

      ii.            Represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games, World or European Championships

Typically, athletes in this category will be 20 years of age or above and who either; currently exhibits a stable performance profile at the level required to achieve either of the objectives of the programme or who have a rising profile that is indicative of achieving the objectives of the programme within a 4 year period.*

CWG Potential

This level of the athlete support pathway offers various forms of performance resource support and may offer financial assistance to those athletes who have the best potential to win a medal at either the 2018 or 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Typically, athletes in this category will be between 17 and 22 years of age who have a rising profile that is indicative of achieving the objectives of the programme within a 4-8 year period.*

*In order to be considered for these programmes, athletes must have achieved the relevant performance matrix standard, have the attributes to achieve the objectives of the programme, be in an environment that is conducive to helping them achieve the objectives of the programme and agree to the terms and conditions of the programme.

Further details surrounding the selection of athletes to these programmes can be seen in the supplementing documents to this page; including the matrix of performance standards that are required for consideration as part of the programmes.

Athletes selected to these two programmes will be expected to sign an athlete agreement that includes their adherence to a code of conduct, outlines the expectation of them as an athlete on a support programme and indicated specifically what each athlete is entitled to as a programme member.

Talent ID Programme

This level of the athlete support pathway offers some forms of performance resource support to those athletes who have the best potential to win a medal at either the 2018 or 2022 Commonwealth Games.  Typically, athletes in this category will be between 14 and 19 years of age who have been involved in their event for a limited period of time but who display many of the characteristics necessary to achieve the objectives of the programme and who have a rising profile that is indicative of achieving the objectives of the programme within a 4-8 year period.  In order to be considered for this programme, athletes are likely to have achieved the relevant performance matrix standard, have the attributes to achieve the objectives of the programme, be in an environment that is conducive helping them to achieve the objectives of the programme and agree to the terms and conditions of the programme.

National Development Programme

This level of the athlete support pathway invites UK top-30 ranked U17, U20 and U23 athletes, their coaches and their parents to attend various development and educational events.  The aim of the prorgamme is to share best practice amongst some of Wales’ most talented individuals and create a sense of ‘togetherness’ in the Athletics community in Wales.  It will provide opportunities for athletes, coaches and parents to learn from one another and increase their understanding of what the necessary requirements are to achieve success at the highest level in the sport of Athletics.
