Note: This section covers Service Awards - Award of Honour, Meritorious Service Award, and Life Membership.
An award scheme for athletics in Wales was first established in the 1950s by the Welsh Amateur Athletic Association. The Award of Honour was the first to be established – in 1952 – and was intended to mark outstanding service over a long period of time. The Meritorious Award followed two years later and was intended to reward individuals for a shorter period of service.
In the major re-organisation of 1990, the Athletics Association of Wales – the body which replaced the Welsh AAA, the Welsh Women’s AAA and the Welsh Cross-Country Association – opted to continue with the Meritorious Award but delayed the continuation of the Award of Honour until 1995.
For individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to our sport, further recognition was possible by being elected a life member of the association, with the number in this category restricted to a maximum of ten.
When Welsh Athletics Limited replaced the Athletics Association of Wales in 2007, it was decided to retain all three categories of awards.

Who Can Nominate An Individual For An Award?
Any individual with a link to athletics in Wales can make a nomination.
A nomination form is included with these notes. Anyone planning to make a nomination is asked to complete the form as fully as possible, and return it to the Welsh Athletics Office by the date indicated below. Clear evidence of the required length of service or the required number of major games attended would be greatly appreciated.
What Happens To Nominations?
All nominations are considered by the Service Awards Panel.
The Service Awards Panel has three possible options:
(a) To recommend the nomination to the AGM, or
(b) To return the nomination to the nominating individual or organisation with a request for further information. In this case, the nominator must provide the extra information in time for the Awards Panel to consider it again before the AGM.
(c) To reject the nomination because evidence of the required criteria has not been shown.
At a Welsh Athletics AGM, one of the members of the Service Awards Panel will report the Panel’s recommendations and it will then be up to the AGM to accept or reject.
For those awards approved by the AGM, the Awards Panel Secretary is required to contact each individual within a month of the AGM to inform him/her of the award and to identify when, where and by whom the award will be made. Usually, the presentation of the award will be made within twelve months of the AGM at which it is approved.
If you wish to nominate an individual for an award but have a query, please contact Welsh Athletics on 02920 644870.
